# How overages work

Customers commit to a base amount of usage. For example, 1,000 API calls per month. When their usage exceeds this committed amount, overage charges apply. These charges can either match the base per-unit rate or use a higher rate to incentivize larger upfront commitments.

  When overage charges are defined, soft limits are automatically enabled to allow continued usage beyond the committed amount. This ensures uninterrupted service while accurately billing for additional usage.
